Pet Care Pricing Comparisons and Information: by Mikayla

Let's talk about pricing. There are different types of pet care services. These services are built for the animals, but also for the pet parents. Informed clients are happy clients! Caring for our society means caring for the animals that are within it. Pets are crucial to our society, and they should be treated with respect, love and knowledgeable care.

Each animal is different from the other, which means that each animal has different needs and wants. The care should be tailored to fit the needs and wants of each animal. There are many ways to achieve optimal care for your pets. Analyzing the type of care that you and your pet(s) would be most comfortable with is important in order to formulate a care plan.

There are no shortages of pet lovers and animal enthusiasts out there. Choosing the right facility, person or small business can be stressful. Don't fret! The pet care industry is doing a great job!

The pet parent will often consider the comfort, safety, risk, pricing and more. Please keep in mind that there is a spectrum of pet care services.

Below this will include the local pricing and national averages for different types of pet care.

Rover (Pet Sitters)-
The app/company Rover utilizes pet sitters (independent contractors) local to your area to perform pet care services for clients across the USA and Canada. This care can range from services in the client's home or the pet sitter's home;
-Drop in visits
-Walks
-Overnight Housesitting
-Daycare
-Boarding

Positives of Rover:
-Rover helps find pet sitters local to the client area. The client has an abundance of options.
-There is a review and rating feature.
-Flexibility when it comes to scheduling as there are a lot of options available to find an available fit.
-There is communication and built in scheduling through the app.
-The Rover Guarantee covers;
  • Up to $25,000 in vet care reimbursement for eligible claims related to injury to either the pet owner's or sitter’s pets.

  • Property damage to the pet owner’s home caused by a sitter, or dog walker.

  • Certain out-of-pocket medical costs for 3rd party injuries (e.g. someone other than the pet owner, sitter, or dog walker).

  • 24/7 support.

-Some sitters are identity/background checked.
-Prices are generally on the lower end which makes it more affordable for clients.
-Photo Updates
-Some sitters are Pet First Aid/CPR certified. ***please see below
-No shortage of animal lovers.
-Made for dogs and cats.
-Sitters set their own prices. With a wide range of sitters comes a wide range of prices, giving the client plenty of options. Often less expensive.
-Drop In Visits near High Point, NC can cost from $10/visit-$56/visit.
-Housesitting near High Point, NC can cost from $15/night to $150/night.
-Boarding near High Point, NC can cost from $19/night to $125/night.

-Doggy Daycare near High Point, NC can cost from $15/day to $100/day.

-Walks near High Point, NC can cost from $10/walk to $50/walk.

Negatives of Rover:
-The Rover Guarantee is NOT Insurance. The guaranteed terms are NOT intended to be an offer to insure OR an insurance contract. It also does not include bonding.
-The Rover Guarantee does NOT cover;
  • An unlicensed home boarding facility.

  • Damages to the sitter’s property or home.

  • Injury to sitters and dog walkers.

  • Injuries to family members or roommates.

  • Vet care costs beyond 30 days.

  • Anything pre-existing or preventable — such as fleas and ticks.

  • Damage, injury or other loss or claim arising in any way from automotive liability, including loss arising from any car or other vehicular accident or incident.

  • Loss due to intentional or criminal acts, including theft.

  • They do NOT cover... Fine art or heirlooms, meaning paintings, etchings, printed photos, pictures, tapestries, rare or art glass, art glass windows, valuable rugs, statuary, sculptures, antique furniture, antique jewelry, bric-a-brac, porcelains, coins, stamps, other collectibles, collections, furs, jewelry, precious stones, analog film or audio recordings, negatives, records, manuscripts, drawings, and other similar property of rarity or historical, archival or sentimental value.

-As a pet owner, you’ll see an 11% service fee listed separately at checkout when you pay for each booking.
-With pricing being mostly on the lower end, that means your pet sitter may not have qualifications, education, certifications, insurance and/or or legal legitimacy. Obtaining qualifications, education, certifications, insurance and legal legitimacy has a high cost. This requires the cost of services to be higher for the pet sitter to make any profit. You get what you pay for.
-Rover does NOT ask for proof or validation of the Pet First Aid/CPR Certification. The sitter can mark they are certified, without actually being certified. If the sitter utilizes the course recommended by Rover...The course they offer costs only about $10.
-Sitters on the app can often be irresponsible, neglectful, inconsistent and unqualified.
-Support isn't personalized. The support/tech team are not pet sitters and often a random person in another state or country.
-Rover only accepts dogs and cats.

-Full name of the sitter is not displayed.

-With a wide range of sitters comes a wide range of prices.

-Lack of quality control.

  • Medical and diet accommodations

  • Constant Water

  • Bath Add Ons

  • Other Animals

  • No one needs to come to your home.

  • Supervision throughout the day.

  • Daycare add on provides an opportunity to play with other dogs.

  • Temperament Tests

  • Quarantine Area

  • Photo Updates are an available option

  • Pools and Play Equipment

  • Structured Environment

  • Can bring items from home such as bedding and treats.

  • If boarding at a veterinarian hospital, there are vets on staff.

  • If your pet tends to destroy things at home or have a lot of accidents, this structured environment might be a good fit.

  • Easily book with them.

  • Cameras placed throughout the facility.

  • Music played throughout the day.

  • Attention for pets

  • Monitor eliminations and eating habits.

  • Opportunities to exercise

Negatives of Boarding Facilities:

  • Can be expensive. Adding additional pets is about the same cost of one pet. Also, EVERYTHING has a cost. Such as; play times, snacks, enrichment, extra potty breaks and so much more.

  • Can heighten stress and increase anxiety.

  • Most cats and dogs feel extremely anxious outside the comfort of their own home.

  • Pets can return home with aggression or inflammatory reactions such as; Diarrhea or cystitis.

  • Animals that aren't social with other animals have a hard time relaxing.

  • Constant Barking and Loud Noises

  • Employee Turnover Rate is High (meaning there will be new people handling your pet frequently)

  • The chance of self injury and altercations are high.

  • Risk of catching an illness such as kennel cough.

  • Requires transporting your pets. There are no options for pick up or drop off.

  • No certification requirements.

  • Small living spaces

  • The difference between Classic and Luxury packages means some pets take priority over others.

  • Individual Play Times are 15 minutes or less for about $15. A lot of the times there is not enough staff to complete, at the highest standard, all paid for individual play times. Meaning, not all services that the customer is paying for, are actually completed.

  • Animals that aren't spayed or neutered aren't allowed to play with other animals. Unless, it is a puppy class.

  • There is generally a rule that there is one worker per 10-20 dogs for supervision during daycare services.  For one person, that is a lot of dogs to guide and/or to deal with emergencies.

  • Seresto collars are taken off during their stay.

  • The temperament test lasts for about 15 minutes and includes only a few behavior questions on a checklist before deciding if it is a good idea to include them in play time.

  • Limited dog behavior training for workers.

  • Everything has a cost.

  • Fast Paced Environment

  • No Overnight Care

  • Music is based on the workers and not what is best for the animals to listen to.

  • Drinking water comes out of a hose and it isn't filtered.

  • Parents have to transport all of their food and belongings to and from the facility.

Once customers understand the value of your services, price is usually not a deterrent.” –PSI President Patti Moran

Overnight pet sitting rates

Some pet sitters offer overnight services for pet owners on vacation or those who are otherwise away and don’t want their pets to be alone. Costs are higher than for a drop-in visit because the client has exclusive use of the pet sitter’s time. Some pet sitters include housesitting services such as bringing in the mail, safety checking the home and taking garbage to the curb.

Most pet sitters have standard rates for the pet sitting services they offer, and will charge extra for additional services, such as 24-hour care, additional pets, and long-distance travel to the client's home.

24-hour care

Pet sitters will often charge more for 24-hour care, additional pets and services provided on holidays.

Some animals — such as puppies, kittens, sick or elderly animals, or pets recovering from surgery — may require more attention and care. Some pet sitters offer around-the-clock pet sitting, and costs are generally higher because this service requires the full attention of the pet sitter. For example, Coco & Boo Pet Concierge Plus charges $200 for 24-hour pet care.

Additional pets

Many pet sitters base their rates on caring for just one or two animals and typically charge a higher rate for more animals. The added cost covers the extra time and effort required to care for the additional animals.

For example, AngelsCare Pet Sitting charges $5 for each additional animal for drop-in visits as well as for overnight services.

Location

Pet sitters in large cities and regions with a higher cost of living typically have higher rates for services than those living in rural areas or small towns. In addition, sitters required to travel in areas with high volumes of traffic and congestion may charge higher rates to cover the additional time and transportation expenses involved in getting to and from clients’ homes.

Holidays

Many pet sitters charge an additional fee for services provided on holidays. As more people go on trips and vacations during the holidays, the demand for pet-sitting services often increases as well.
