Winter Safety

The sun is out today, but winter is coming!

Here are some tips to help you and your fur baby keep safe and warm, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

-Take your fur babies for their yearly wellness exam. Cold weather can affect arthritis, among other things.

-Each fur baby has a different tolerance to cold weather depending on many factors like their coat, body fat, activity level, etc. Identify your pet's tolerance and tailor activities. Example: If your pet is elderly, it is more likely they will slip on slick surfaces like ice. If your pet has an illness that affects their ability to regulate their body temperature, please take extra caution.

-Your pet's sleeping preference might change to help adjust to different temps. Provide some options for more warmth or less.

-Cats and Dogs should not be left outside for prolonged periods. Even though they have fur, they are still susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite.

-The underneath of your car is a warm spot. Pets love to curl up underneath in order to warm up. Please check under your vehicles before driving off.

-Check the paw pads on a regular basis. Wipe their feet off after an outdoor excursion.

-Play dress up if your pet has short hair.

-Snow can interfere with your pet's tracking ability. If your pet gets loose, they may have a harder time finding their way home. Use a collar and microchip to assist with bringing your pet home.

-Clean up your antifreeze and de-icer. It will most likely cause harm or death if consumed.

-Avoid ice, recognize problems, attend vet appointments, provide shelter, feed well, and BE PREPARED.
